QWASI hosts Auburn iRACE (Innovation in Retail and Consumer Experience) Initiative focusing on COVID safe NFC contactless technology

News, Press Release

QWASI has the pleasure of partnering with Auburn University for the second iRACE Hackathon led by the Innovation in Retail and Consumer Experience (iRACE) Initiative of the Department of Consumer and Design Sciences at Auburn University. This student-led ‘invention marathon will be focusing on COVID safe NFC contactless technology with RLG, and Cellotape.

More than 80 students/professors have convened to participate in this virtual hackathon since COVID began. The university student-led technology competition is an NFC touch-free “invention marathon,” where students learn about emerging technology and attempt to solve challenges by building and sharing their technological creations. Auburn is partnering with RLG, Cellotape, QWASI, NXP, and Avery Dennison to engage the best and brightest students from Auburn University’s iRACE Initiative’s education programs to compete in this year’s hackathon.

The participating students were provided with a roadmap to learn about new technology such as NFC as well as a host of resources to support the competition. Participants will receive a challenge at the start of the event and then have 2 weeks to collaborate in teams to build a technological solution. The iRACE Initiative by the Department of Consumer and Design Sciences at Auburn University will host the competition, which starts at noon Monday, April 5th, and runs through 1 p.m. Monday the 19th.

“The main purpose of starting the Auburn iRACE Hackathon was to really push students to embrace the use of emerging technology to produce practical applications that can assist during COVID and beyond,” said Wis Kwon, Director of the iRACE Initiative at Auburn University.

The event will also serve as a valuable showcase for students to potential employers. Six companies have sponsored the competition and will have representatives on hand to mentor the students and recruit them for internships and jobs.

“We really love what we do,” Kwon said. “The Auburn University iRACE Initiative strives to provide students with opportunities to embrace the spirit of innovation, and we are excited to see what the students create this year.”
